I run Spybot, but haven't enabled the "immunization" as doing so makes changes to the registry IIRC. I'm not a PC expert so I'm hestitant to have the program make these changes. Am I being too cautious? TIA

No. But make sure you do regular complete backups as often as possible. That's your final, fallback protection.

Avg is not a bad antivirus. Its one of the top ones out there. I usually click x or close any pop up before they can load.

Thru,

I think you are too cautious.
1. I never seen anything reported of his programs running amuck.
2. Every change made by Spybot is written to an archive and can be stored.
3. The changes ( mostly to MS Browser ) that I've seen have never changed/blocked anything I thought was wrongly accused.
4. TeaTimer used to be annoying when MS Updates ran, now it's smart enough to know not to nag. Not so for Java yet.
5. The fact that you are not an expect is just why you leave the driving to somebody like SpyBot.

Between SpyBot and SpywareBlaster, I find it amazing how many scripts don't run when I load a page. The quantity varies by site. Yahoo and google are mostly free of crap, Silicon Investor has lots of crap in their ad scripts.

Just saying that's got to be good site can be foolish. I've even had ads blocked from my bank's site, and that is are top national people oriented bank. Seems thy use Akamia a lot, more than just their few ads. If you click on a link to a bank function, the script runs off to Akamia to log that you followed a link to a function, even down to doing this when you logon to online banking. Why the bank wants some external company to verify you clicked on logon, beats me, but they do. You would think they would track that via the bank's own servers. My guess, they have a contract with some marketing outfit and that's how the marketing outfit gets their data. I find that somewhat scary. The data is basically just a token, and is probably just an on-line cookie thing.

Kirk,

My resident computer tech ( my son ) says the XP System Backup and restore is junk and lets you down more times than it fixes the issue.

System software can always be rebuilt cleanly from scratch. The key to not getting burned is backing up your data effectively, which I know you do. Yeah, rebulding a system can be a pain, but it's just hours. Data replacement could take years.

.
I think junk is too strong a word. It's not great but it has gotten me out of a jam a few times. It's built into the XP operating system and very easy to use so you might as well use it and try to restore from it if the situation arises.
.
That said, there is nothing better than a good recent backup. I use both Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image because I don't fully trust either one of them.

Meanwhile, I am still infected with winantiviruspro2007. It pops up at random about once every 10 or 15 minutes. I have updated Firefox and Firefox 3.0 will be out soon. My ISP provides scam blocker etc. but it is for IE, I think. There is some issue recently between IE and Firefox - it seems that if a computer has both, you can be using IE and some invader can come in and start Firefox for their own nefarious reasons - or something like that.

Have you tried installing the Adblock plugin for Firefox. It is supposed to be pretty good and may be worth a try.

Norm has the right idea. Go to the experts.

You will need hijackthis & combofix but that will come in your instructions once an expert is in contact with you.

If you are not already registered at spybot go here (top left register):

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php...

while you are at it read thru and complete the Malware Removal procedure at the link above prior to requesting help.

Once you are in contact with expert help this is the kind of help you can expect (this person "seethesound" has your problem winantiviruspro2007 pop ups): http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php...

___

Follow the instructions of the expert to the T and you will be fine. Do not fix anything with hijackthis or combofix without the help of the expert.
