» allancoleman - GNMAs up today ? ?

In response to GNMAs up today ? ? posted by Arkhog:

I definitely do , Arkhog . My original advice was to buy the Vanguard High - Yield ( junk ) bond funds ( VWEHX & VWEAX ) at any price under $6.00 a share . And even though we've seen the nav price decline lower in this stock market correction ( High - Yield nav prices tend to follow the stock market and not the treasury market as other bond mutual funds do ) , I still think the Vanguard High - Yield bond fund will continue to increase in nav price as this stock market recovers and continue to be the best of the junk and continue to pay higher yields .

My approxiumate allocation between my GNMAs and High - Yield is now roughly 72% GNMAs and 28% High - Yield which is a little too much High - Yield than I'd like right now , as the High - Yield nav prices continue to increase and I purchase GNMAs in the future , my ratio will decline to more reasonable levels .

A short answer to your question is would I buy GNMAs now at their present nav prices - NO . Would I buy Vanguard's High - Yield ( junk ) bond fund at it's present nav price - YES . But each individual investor has to be their own money manager and make their own investing decisions and accept full responsibility for those decisions as I do .

» allancoleman - Year to date performance

Looks like my year to date performance in my Invested portfolio after tomorrow's final numbers could be as little as ( - 2.59% ) more or less and my year to date performance in my Total portfolio could be as little as ( - 1.36% ) . Needless to say , I expect my ending numbers will definitely be on a uptrend from weeks and months earlier .

Actual dollar amounts could be losses of $49k in my Total portfolio and as much as $70k in my Invested portfolio .

Don't expect to be able to post my final end of the month figures until I arrive in Alaska the morning of May 2nd because my flight time is extremely early Thursday morning , but I figure I'm very likely to be a happy camper no matter what the market does tomorrow . happy

My own cup is still half full and filling up .

» allancoleman - Yields

In response to Yields posted by allancoleman:

Some yields changed overnite :

VFIJX stayed the same at 4.94%
VBTLX increased to 4.47%
VMMXX stayed the same at 2.41%
VWEAX declined to 8.37% making my combined average weighted yield between this fund and my GNMAs at 5.90%

After tomorrow's fed decision , money market yields should set a bottom on this cycle .

Don't know what I like best , my high - yield fund with a rising nav price and declining yield or accept the falling nav price with a higher yield . Dang if you do and dang if you don't . happy

With the ten year treasury yield opening lower again today , we could have the nav prices of our favorite Vanguard GNMA funds ( VFIIX & VFIJX ) close higher again today . But with the Fed statement today , the treasury prices could go anywhere by the close .

Observation last nite was that the return of Vanguard tax - exempt money market fund ( VMSXX ) at 2.47% is now beating and ahead of the taxable money market fund ( VMMXX ) at 2.41% . Don't think I've ever seen that before . It'll be interesting to watch this going forward because my long term plan is to finish transfering my accounts from Schwab to Vanguard with closing my bucket number one from my Schwab One account to Vanguard's tax - exempt money market account to continue writing myself checks when needed . That'll just leave a $55k IRA left with Schwab that I'll deplete with distributions probably later this year and next .

With the ten year treasury yield moving from down to even from yesterday's close on the Fed quarter point rate cut , we could have the nav prices of our favorite Vanguard GNMAs close unchanged or close to unchanged today .

I think the nav prices of GNMAs will react in the future more to bond trader influences than the Fed speak . Low point for GNMA prices continues to be $10.25 and the high point price at $10.55 .
