Note that neither John or Gary seem to be considering the non-bank money centers, which have been the Principal source of money for mortgages, etc.
I will answer your query in some further detail after I have considered it a little. But beware, THERE IS LITTLE SIGN THAT THE CREDIT CRUNCH (IN SELECTED MARKETS, SUCH AS MBCP) IS EASING IN THE LEAST.
