"The Conference Board's expectations index, meanwhile, hit its second-lowest level ever, falling to 47.9 in March from 58.0 in February. In December 1973, expectations were at 45.2."

Do people know how nasty the recession of 1973-75 was? The current recession would be worse. American People will keep getting told by rogue economists that we will have a very short recession because how great the Fed and USG are in managing the economy with interventions.

In response to Consumer confidence at multi year lows posted by Jas_Jain:

Just about every single economic data point in the past couple of months has been outright dismal. Yesterday housing prices rose just a bit and all the rose colored glasses commentators on the financial shows were out in full force calling an end to the housing meltdown. NOT!!! These are the same folks who said housing prices could never fall in the summer of 2006. All the rose colored glasses folks are hanging their hat on is the Fed being the white knight and coming to the rescue of the financial system and economy. Well all this Fed money pumping may bail out some banks, but it's not going to put a dent the tens if not hundreds of trillions in overall derivative contracts that are eating away at the finances of companies across the world. Plus all the money pumping the Fed is doing is going to be feeding inflation in the coming months and years (sorry Jas).

The truth is that it is the bears who have had this story right from day one. We can go back in time a couple years to debates between the bulls and bears and see whose predictions came true. Any bull takers?

» permabear - The true definition of a recession

http://www.nber.org/cycles/cyclesmain.ht...
The NBER does not define a recession in terms of two consecutive quarters of decline in real GDP. Rather, a recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. For more information, see the latest announcement on how the NBER's Business Cycle Dating Committee chooses turning points in the Economy and its latest memo, dated 07/17/03.
