He says more should be done for the existing conventional autos. He is employed by the government and he directed a project to convert a VW to a higher mileage vehicle. The horsepower remained the same but 25% more mileage or improvement in emissions was obtained. It costs more money. The car may accelerate slower. Low rolling resistance tires, gear changes, elimination of outside mirrors, less weight, etc. were used to achieve the savings. Al Gore and friends could challenge the auto co.s to produce a gas mileage vehicle by converting an existing model. Would people pay more to achieve better mileage? Does Al really care? Even a Prius could be improved. -- posted by axolotl » Chgo - Is there hope? . Worried about global warming and ruining the planet? I think Mother Earth ain't as dumb as we think. How smart is She? "Greenland, a self-governing province of Denmark, was settled by the pugilistic Viking Erik the Red in the 10th century, after his murderous ways got him ejected from Iceland. Legend has it that he called it Greenland as a way to entice others to join him, and, in fact, it was. It was relatively green then, with forests and fertile soil, and the Vikings grew crops and raised sheep for hundreds of years. But temperatures dropped precipitously in the so-called Little Ice Age, which began in the 16th century, the Norse settlers died out and agriculture was no longer possible. BUT...the global warming models are highly accurate right? Riiiiiiiiight. -- posted by lcha » Rebecca800 - Michael Crichton In response to Michael Crichton posted by rasputin:
In the UK, more greenhouse gases arise from cattle passing wind than from cars. The link between CO2 emissions and global warming remains tenuous. And yet the public are reminded on a daily basis that they are killing the Earth. Erm... A little clarity, please?? Global warming is another example of the media using exagerration and doomsday scenarios to beef up the ratings. The government and large organisations with a message and motives of their own may or may not choose to use this to their advantage. With contentious issues, journalists are encouraged to take an angle on the story, and that is when selective reporting and bias comes into play. What's more, it's also not uncommon for lazy journalists to pass off press releases as their own research - meaning the material is spoonfed and not independent at all. I think Crichton put the message out there in an intelligent way. He didn't damn the facts or opinions of either side but reminded people to question what they hear. It is sad that we are still so easily manipulated. -- posted by Rebecca800 » tjg911 - The whole "manmade" GW thing is so silly In response to Is there hope? posted by Chgo:. Today (11/3 Saturday) on the National Geographic channel (Direct TV channel 276) at 2 pm ET watch Naked Science, the episode is called Solar Force. It aired earlier this week so this is a rerun of Tuesday or Wednesday. Naked Science is an excellent series and this one really makes you shake your head at all the GW ninnies! . It is staggering to see how foolish some people are who believe they have the answers to such complex and ancient forces! . I watch a lot of these science oriented programs on various channels and especially like the ones that discuss earth history. As they say, ignorance is bliss, here's to all the GW ninnies! .
