How El Niño slows the Earth's spin
* 21 October 2007
* NewScientist.com news service
El Niño has an immense impact on the weather, so great in fact that
the ocean warming phenomenon actually makes the planet spin more
slowly. Until now, though, no one knew why.
It was also a mystery why the effect did not kick in for several weeks
after ocean temperatures reached their peak. Now, Jean Dickey and her
colleagues at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena says
that the answer is blowing in the wind.
El Niño events warm Pacific surface waters in the tropics, resulting
in strong westerly thermal winds. The total Earth system spins with a
constant speed, but these winds make the atmosphere spin slightly
faster. Due to the conservation of angular momentum the body of Earth
then slows to compensate, making the days a little longer.
Because the atmosphere dissipates heat slowly, the temperature takes a
month or two to reach its peak, explaining the delay in Earth's
deceleration (Geophysical Research Letters, DOI:
10.1029/2007GL030846).
The effect is slight, says Dickey. "The overall changes of angular
momentum between the Earth and atmosphere during El Niño cause a
slowdown at the 1 millisecond [per day] level," she says.

"Greenland, a self-governing province of Denmark, was settled by the pugilistic Viking Erik the Red in the 10th century, after his murderous ways got him ejected from Iceland. Legend has it that he called it Greenland as a way to entice others to join him, and, in fact, it was.
It was relatively green then, with forests and fertile soil, and the Vikings grew crops and raised sheep for hundreds of years. But temperatures dropped precipitously in the so-called Little Ice Age, which began in the 16th century, the Norse settlers died out and agriculture was no longer possible. "

I ran across an account of the weather in Feb., 1905 in the USA. It was extremely cold with 40 below temps as far south as Missouri. There was ice on the Delaware River which closed Philadelphia to ship traffic. Blocks of ice were floating in the rivers around New York. There are cycles of warming and cooling - everyone agrees.

Did you see where this years Atlantic hurricane activity was the lowest in 30 years. There were 17 named storms predicted. Last years prediction was way off the mark too. Sounds like the models need some tweaking.
BUT...the global warming models are highly accurate right? Riiiiiiiiight.

Yes- I was so pleased to see a mainstream writer step forward and point out that global warming isnt PROVEN its just a THEORY.
In the UK, more greenhouse gases arise from cattle passing wind than from cars.
The link between CO2 emissions and global warming remains tenuous.
And yet the public are reminded on a daily basis that they are killing the Earth. Erm... A little clarity, please??
Global warming is another example of the media using exagerration and doomsday scenarios to beef up the ratings. The government and large organisations with a message and motives of their own may or may not choose to use this to their advantage.
With contentious issues, journalists are encouraged to take an angle on the story, and that is when selective reporting and bias comes into play. What's more, it's also not uncommon for lazy journalists to pass off press releases as their own research - meaning the material is spoonfed and not independent at all.
I think Crichton put the message out there in an intelligent way. He didn't damn the facts or opinions of either side but reminded people to question what they hear.
It is sad that we are still so easily manipulated.

Like Hell he has! He does NOT deny recent cooling; but only maintains that it is a 'blip' on the record. Something that I have long maintained for the lousy 30 years of 'warming' out of a 4 billion year record: that's 7.5 times 10 to the minus 7th percent of the record! Note that temperature ALSO dropped by 0.1% per decade from 1947 through 1977!!!! And, the temperature at the turn of the 19th century to the 20th was almost a degree lower (estimated average). The Hudson even froze over one winter!
