A look at some of the investment opportunities in the precious metals sector including gold, silver, platinum, titanium and uranium.

As investors lose confidence in the markets and the smell of recession hits the air, precious metals become a perceived safe haven.

Gold Investment

Gold has always been seen as the safe haven for investors. Its resistance to inflation and status as the number one precious metal investment means its demand will always outweigh its supply. Therefore it should be considered safe investment, especially for the long term investor. For more information please read Predicting the Future Price of Gold.

Silver Investment

Although the price of silver is approximately one fiftieth the price of gold, it should still be seen as a solid long term investment.

Alongside its uses in jewellery, photography and electronics, there are a number of interesting new applications that silver will be used for more in the future.

It’s being tested as a suitable replacement for expensive platinum in catalytic converters and it’s also used in the manufacture of solar panels.

Platinum Investment

Investors should be aware that the automobile industry accounts for around 50 percent of platinum, use so if the car industry is doing poorly then so will the price of platinum. On the upside platinum is used in car catalytic converters. With the world becoming more and more environmentally conscious it seems that this application of platinum will grow and grow.

Titanium Investment

Titanium is the “ninth” industrial metal and is the fourth most abundant structural metal on earth. It’s expensive because the process of extraction is complicated.

Titanium has numerous uses and has great scope for medical applications because unlike other metals the body will not reject titanium. Most hip joints are constructed from titanium.

Titanium is also used in

  • Golf Equipment
  • Designer Jewellery
  • Pigments, additives and coatings.

Also due to its incredible durability and light weight it is used extensively in aerospace, marine and military applications.

Uranium Investment

Uranium can be seen as a good investment because

  • China alone plans to build in the region of 200 nuclear power plants in the coming years
  • There has yet to emerge a viable energy alternative to nuclear power that can meet huge energy demands
  • If countries are to maintain their greenhouse gas targets more nuclear power plants will have to be built

LOL you had me with the werewolf comment. That was great!

I've been trying to understand better the precious metals market so I appreciated your advice here. I had been wondering why platinum was trading so low lately. I had no idea it was so heavily used in the auto industry. So that was very interesting to me. Lear just released a free widget called ExactPrice (www.learcapital.com/exactprice) for tracking in real time the price of gold, silver, and platinum (which continues to slump). I've been using it to track the markets and i've found watching them go up and down intriguing and admittedly exciting. Maybe they'll add titanium and uranium to it at some point. That would be cool.

Thanks for the info I'm going to check out your article on Predicting the future price of gold. As it continues to appear to me as I learn more about investments that's a good means for adding some protection to ones portfolio.
